CenturyLink Center Olympic Trials Pool Installation

The CenturyLink Center, managed by MECA, was chosen as the site of the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympic Swim Trials. MMC Contractors was retained by the Omaha Sports Authority on a design-assist basis during the early stages of the project to assist the swimming pool consultants with the design of the interconnected piping for the warm-up and competition pools. The pools were assembled in sections on the existing arena and convention center floors and a deck constructed at the top level of the pools. MMC Contractors furnished and installed the interconnecting piping between the pools, pumps, filters and boilers and assisted with setting the equipment.

The warm-up pool and the competition pool, at about 1,000,000 gallons each, had to be assembled, piped and operational within a one-week period between the closing of an event and the opening of the trials. The pools then needed to be disassembled so they could be moved to a new site in a one week period between the closing of the swim trials and the opening of another event. Our work included installing a new natural gas main for the domestic water boilers serving the pool heating systems. We also set the pool heating equipment, circulating pumps and almost 1,000 linear foot of heat rated piping to deliver the water necessary for maintaining 1.7 million gallons of competition pool water in 2 pools. The project is a team effort of coordinating the activities of 3 companies concentrating on the related aspects of the total pool system including precise control of water temperature, pumping capacity and operation / maintenance of the systems during the event.
