University of Nebraska-Omaha Community Engagement Center

Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (CEC) is the permanent home of the University of Nebraska Omaha’s signature outreach programs, including the Service Learning Academy and the Student Volunteer and Leadership Collaborative. It is the only stand alone, comprehensive, engagement-specific university facility in the country that serves to strengthen UNO’s existing outreach efforts and foster future opportunities for partnerships between UNO students, faculty, staff and nonprofit or governmental organizations. The Interior of the three-story (One story of parking and two stories of finished space), 45,000 square foot building has many impressive features: an atrium with interactive touch screen historical and information digital displays, multiple meeting spaces for up to 275 people, lounge areas for students to study and relax, glass-walled classrooms and meeting rooms outfitted with computer hookups, LCD monitors and other technology to enhance learning.

MMC Contractors was retained by Hawkins Construction Company on a design assist basis during the early stages of the project design to perform the HVAC hydronic piping, sheet metal, plumbing and site utility analysis, recommendations and installations. MMC and its subcontractors, along with Hawkins Construction Company were able to bring this project to completion on time in February of 2014 and within UNO’s budget.
