Building the Best

Ryan Novacek serves as vice president of the MMC Contractors Nebraska office, where he supports the operations team to ensure they have the resources and information that they need to do their jobs.

One of the most important items that MMC Contractors focuses on is the recruitment, development, and retainment of our team. We strongly believe that the quality of the people at MMC Contractors is one of our biggest differentiators when compared to others in our markets and industry. We focus on doing things that attract, challenge, grow, develop, and help every member of our team to be the best they can be -- not only personally but also professionally. From training to our ESOP and other opportunities the organization pursues, we offer many things in conjunction with one another to provide a means for team members to develop and grow.

Outside of job-specific opportunities for growth, some examples of the training that is offered are the MCAA Institute for Project Management, MCAA Advanced Leadership Institute, MMC’s Annual Mechanical Conference, MMC Corp’s Best Practice Groups, and MMC Corp Leadership Training – just to name a few. In addition to these, several specialty group “summits” meet throughout the year that provide a great way for specific groups within our company to share ideas, practices, hear guest speakers, and, more importantly, opportunities to share and help everyone learn from each other. That sharing of information is a critical tool to the growth and success of the individuals that participate, as well as to the organization and ultimately to our ESOP.

Another area of focus is technology and how it can impact operational efficiencies. MMC Contractors is always trying to find better ways to do things, whether it be fabrication, Lean practices, streamlined communication, document control, or file transfer/storage. Technology is allowing us to find new ways to do everyday tasks as well as giving us opportunities to do things that once were thought to be impossible.

Through sharing of best practices in our MMC Corp Best Practice Groups, individuals get a chance to work with their peers from across the country to learn from each other and work together to develop ways to streamline and improve efficiencies within the organization as a whole. One of the most exciting things to see is when group is working on developing a new way to improve a task, and one of the team members takes on a challenge or brings an idea they have to the table and is able to integrate that process into all of our offices across the country. We have found that empowering all the employees with the awareness that ideas at all levels of the company are encouraged to be shared is crucial to success; the innovation is recognized, and everyone has the opportunity to feel like they are part of the team while at the same time providing an impact to something greater than their day-to-day projects.

Empowering employees is one of the best things we can do in order to build and retain the best in the industry. The continued growth and encouragement from top-down to create further opportunities is one of the ways we will set ourselves up for success well into the future.
