CoreCivic Awards Prison Project to MMC Contractors Kansas City

Monday, February 19, 2018

The MMC Contractors Kansas City office teamed with JE Dunn to pursue the new Lansing Correctional Facility in Lansing, Kansas. The team was led by developer CoreCivic (formerly CCA). The CoreCivic/JE Dunn/MMC team was selected for the project by the Kansas Department of Corrections, but this was just the beginning. The next step was to get the Kansas State Finance Committee to approve the construction of the prison. This was not easy — a vote was expected to pass in early December, but there were many delays in the process and it was finally passed on January 24, 2018.

MMC Contractors will be in a design-build role with DLR as the engineer. Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2018.

The current prison includes a maximum security area, built in 1860, and a medium security area. The project will include demolition of the current medium security area and construction of a new 1920-bed medium security unit and a 512-bed minimum security unit.

CoreCivic will own the facility upon completion and will lease the prison back to the State of Kansas for 20 years, at which time Kansas will take over ownership.
